3.
A liquid phase, first order reaction A→B takes place in a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor
(CSTR) and a Plug Flow Reactor (PFR) connected in series. For the stream entering the first
reactor (CSTR), the molar flowrate of A is FA = 1 mol s¹, while the total volumetric
flowrate v. 0.4 m³ min. The reaction rate constant is k = 0.1 s. The conversion of A
exiting the first reactor is 0.4, while the (overall) conversion of A exiting the second reactor is
0.8.
a) Calculate the volumes of the two reactors, VcSTR and VPFR-
[10]
b) Find the overall conversion if the reactor order is reversed (PFR followed by CSTR),
but the volume of each reactor stays the same as you calculated in part a).
[10]
c) Which reactor sequence (CSTR followed by PFR or PFR followed by CSTR) would
provide the highest conversion if the reaction was zero order instead of first order, and
why?
