3. (35 points) A simple beam AB of span length L = 22 ft (Fig. 3a) supports a uniform load
of intensity q = 1.5 kip/ft (weight of beam included) and a concentrated load P = 12 kip. The
concentrated load acts at a point 9.0 ft from the left-hand end of the beam. The beam is
constructed of glued laminated wood and has a cross section of width b = 8.75 in. and
height h=27 in. (Fig 3b):
(a) Determine the moment of inertia of the cross section
(b) Given the shear diagram of the beam, determine the max bending moment in the
beam
(c) Determine the maximum tensile and compressive stresses in the beam due to
bending.
