Problem # 6:
To heat up crude oil (21 °API) in a furnace from 80 °C to 200 °C flowing at a rate of 25 kg/min,
50 kgmol/hr of a fuel composed of an equimolar mixture of n-butane (1)/ n-pentane (2), is burned
in a 60% excess air where 75% of n-butane produces CO2, 20% produces CO, and the rest does
not react, while 70% of n-pentane produces CO2 and the rest goes to incomplete combustion.
NOTE: n-butane (C4H10) n-pentane → (CsH12)
Atomic weights: C-12 H-1 0-16 N=14
Calculate:
1. Sketch the process. Label all streams and components
2. Write the chemical reaction(s) that takes place during the process
3. Find the theoretical O₂
4. Find the composition of the flue gas (Orsat Analysis, molar basis)
5. Determine the total amount (mass) of flue gas produced (dry basis; N₂ free) in [kg]
