QUESTION 1 An intermediate shaft of a gearbox, supporting two spur gears A and B and mounted between two bearings C1 and C2, is shown in the Figure below. The pitch circle diameters of gears A and B are 500 and 250 mm respectively. The shaft is made of alloy steel 20MnCr5. (Sut = 620 N/mm² and Sy=480 N/mm²). Note that, the gears are keyed to the shaft. a) Calculate the forces, bending and torsional moment experienced by the gear. Then, based on your calculation, draw the corresponding Shear Forces, Bending Moment and Torsional Moment diagram for both Vertical and Horizontal Plane. Hint: start with Free Body Diagram. b) Determine the shaft diameter based on strength basis. c) Determine the shaft diameter on the basis of torsional rigidity if the permissible angle of twist is 0.5° per metre length. Assume G = 79300 N/mm². d) Determine the shaft diameter using the ASME code. Use the factors k = 2 and k₁ = 1.5. e) Based on your calculations above, which approach will give the most conservative result for the shaft diameter? Justify. 200
