Question 4: Bernoulli Equation [15 marks total]
Blood flow from the left ventricle into the aorta can be modeled as a reducing nozzle (see schematic
below). Model both the left ventricle and the aorta as a circular tube with diameter of Di-3.1 cm
and D-2.7 cm, respectively. The pressure in the left ventricle is 130 mmHg (P1). Blood is ejected
from the left ventricle (VI) at a speed of 120 cm/s and into the aorta (V2) at a speed of 158 cm/s. The
pressure in the aorta is 123 mmHg (P2). Calculate the difference in height, h-Az, between these two
locations (left ventricle & aorta). Give your answer in cm. Notes: density of blood is 1050kg/m³
and Conversion Factor: 1 mmHg=133.32 Pa.
V₂
Aorta, Location 2
V₂ = 158 cm/s
P2-123 mmHg
h=Az
Left Ventricle, Location 1
V₁ = 120 cm/s
P=130 mmHg
