The beam in Figure 3 is 6 m long and supports a point load of 5 kN and a uniformly
distributed load of 6 kN/m as shown.

(e). Calculate the magnitude and location of the maximum tensile, compressive and
shear stresses in this case if a rectangular cross section, whose dimensions are
120mm x 300mm, orientated so that it is bending about its major axis of bending,
is used for the beam.
