1. Cyclohexane C6H12 can be manufactured from benzene C6H6 and hydrogen via the reaction
C6H6 + 3H2C6H12
The reaction takes place at 390°F and 370 psia.
a. Complete the mass balances around this I/O structure. The product stream is 99.9 mol%
cyclohexane and 0.1 mol% benzene. You can assume that both feed streams are pure.

b. Industrial processes feed excess hydrogen to the reactor. Why? (HINT: This reaction is equilibrium
limited, and benzene and cyclohexane are difficult to separate.)
c. Draw the recycle structure for this process. Make stream (4) the reactor feed. You can assume that
the per-pass conversion of benzene is 99.9% and unreacted benzene leaves in the product stream.
d. Complete the mass balances around your recycle structure and report them in a correctly formatted
stream table. Leave the per-pass conversion of hydrogen as a variable, x.
