Problem 2:
The drag coefficient measured from model testing is often used for estimation of the drag of
actual systems (e.g. airplanes, cars, ships). The drag force (F) is related to the drag coefficient
(Co), density (p), velocity (V), and area (A) through the relationship:
Cp
F
0.5pV2A
In the test of a model car, the following information has been obtained:
F = 1.7 kN average of 20 tests with a standard deviation of 0.05 kN and a
calibration error of ±0.05 kN
• V = 30 m/s average of 20 tests with a standard deviation of 0.5 m/s and
calibration error of 0.2 m/s
•
A = 3000 cm²
• p = 1.18 kg/m³
Determine the drag coefficient and the uncertainty in that coefficient with 95% confidence. Use
the analytical (i.e. take the derivatives) method.
