Section I: Liquid Level Process
1) Two cylindrical tanks are connected in series. The outlet of each tank has a concentrated flow
resistance (R) dominated by a valve. The flow through both values is turbulent. The outlet valve
of Tank 1 has an upstream pressure of H₁ "feet of head" and a downstream pressure of H₂ "feet
of head". The outlet valve for Tank 2 expels its fluid into atmospheric pressure. See figure below.
Parameters:
•
Nominal flow rate is 0.5 ft³ per second.
Fluid density is 62.4 lbm/ft³
The targeted liquid depth of tank 1 is 12 feet. At the targeted level, the volume of fluid in tank 1 would
be 144 ft3.
• The cross-sectional area of Tank 2 is 5 ft².
• The flow resistance of valve 2 is one-half of the flow resistance of valve 1
Refer to the pre-derived transfer function in the textbook.
a) Determine the depth ( 2 ) of liquid in Tank 2 at nominal flow rates
b) If the inlet flow suddenly increases by 20 gallons per minute (gpm), determine the change in
flow rate q2 after 1 minute.
