386 Reinforced Concrete Design Problems 12.1 12.2 12.3 Describe briefly four different types of concrete retaining walls. Describe the behaviour of the various elements of a cantilever retaining wall. A reinforced concrete retaining wall of cantilever type is 7.0 m high above the foundation level, as shown in Figure P12.3. It retains earth with a horizontal backfill subjected to a live load surcharge of 15 kN/m². The safe bearing capacity of soil is 200 kN/m² and the coefficient of friction between soil and concrete is 0.50. Assume that the backfill has a unit weight of 17 kN/m³ and an angle of shearing resistance of 30°. Use Grade C30 concrete, Grade 500 steel reinforcement and 50 mm nominal concrete cover. (a). Check the wall stability against overturning, sliding and settlement. (b). Design all the necessary reinforcements required in the stem and the base, and check shear and cracking requirements. 15 kN/m² 000000 00000 -250 600 6000 1000 3100 1600 1300 All units in mm Figure P12.3
