(a) Starting with the general expression for the electric field in a plane wave E =
Eoei(wt-kz) derive an expression for the electric field in a plane wave
propagating in a dissipative medium. Show that attenuation of the wave is
governed by v but not n.
(b) A monochromatic plane wave with wavelength 500μm is propagating through a
dissipative medium with refractive index 1-0.0002i. If the peak amplitude of
the electric field is 1Vm1 at a specific location in the medium, how much is it
10cm further along the direction of propagation?
(c) The wave from (b) is now approaching the edge of the medium, and will pass
out into free space. If the angle of incidence is not 90°, how much will the
wave deflect as it passes out into free space?
