The effect of a location of the open feedwater heater on the thermal efficiency of the non-deal cycle of a steam power plant utilizing the Rankine cycle is to be investigated. The plant produces 500 MW of power output. Steam leaves the steam generator at 10 MPa, 500°C, and the cycle has a condenser pressure of 10 kPa. 1) Plot the influence of the feedwater heater pressure (in terms of rise of feedwater enthalpy / maximum rise of feedwater enthalpy) on the cycle efficiency. Investigate the intermediate pressure at which the system will give you optimum performance for one heater. 2) If the cost of installing a single feedwater heater is 5% of the total cost of 0.8 x 106 S/MW of the simple power plant with no heaters, discuss the economics of adding feedwater heater(s) with respect to improvement in the plant efficiency. The cost of heat energy that is to be added to the boiler may be considered as 0.02 S/MJ. Also discuss how many years would be needed to recover the cost of installing one feedwater heater. 3) Discuss what would be the environmental impact of adding feedwater heaters? Deliverables Your report should include schematic and temperature-entropy diagrams, all thermal-economic calculations in addition to the problem statement. Clearly highlight the advantages and disadvantages of adding feedwater heaters and the selection of intermediate pressure(s) to maximize the system performance. An executive summary describing the highlights of your achievements should be provided. Be sure to state all assumptions clearly. Note: The computer software Engineering Equation Solver (EES) that can be used for executing the project is available in the ME department computer labs.
