Transmission system Vs VG Wind turbine Distribution system Fig. 1 Wind turbine connected to a distribution system A wind turbine is connected to a distribution system as shown in Fig. 1. The real generated power is P and the reactive power consumed by the WT generator is Q. Given that R = 9.18, X = 6.45, the line-neutral source voltage is Vs = 12.47 kV, wind farm power output is P = 3 MW. Considering three lagging power factors: a) PF1 = 0.7, b) PF2 = 0.85, and c) PF3 = 0.98, determine 1) The voltage at the generator for three power factors above. 2) The voltage difference between the grid and the generator and the system power loss 3) The voltage change at the turbine as a percent of the grid voltage 4) Analyze the results in Table 2. Explain why Vo and power loss change the way shown by the results. 5) As a grid operator, at what power factor do you allow the wind turbine to operate? Provide basis for your decision. 6) The 1-phase and 3-phase fault level at the generator For calculation of AV=Vc-Vs, use both equations, i.e. the 4th order equation and the one for lightly loaded circuits. Present the results in Table 2. Table 2 PF1=0.7 PF2 = 0.85 PF3=0.98 Vo, kV Method 1 (4th order equation) AV, V Method 2 (lightly loaded circuits) AV as % of AV as % of AV, V grid Vs grid Vs Power loss, KW Q, WT, MVAR
