4. A mass m₁ rests on a frictionless horizontal table. Attached to it is a string of length L which runs horizontally to the edge of the table, where it passes over a small frictionless pulley and vertically down to a mass m2 which is suspended by the string. Use x and y as the distances of m₁ and m2 from the pulley respectively. These satisfy the constraint equation f(x,y)=x+y - L = 0. Write down the two modified Lagrange equations and solve them (together with the constraint equation) for ï and ÿ, and the Lagrange multiplier λ. Hence find the tension forces on the two masses. Check your answers using the Netonian approach.
