1. Steam at a pressure of 1.4 MPa, 300°C is flowing in a pipe. Connected to this pipe through a valve
(which is closed) is a 0.4 m³ tank which contains saturated vapor at 350 kPa. The valve is opened, and
steam from the line flows into the tank until the pressure is 1.4 MPa. Calculate the final temperature
and the mass of steam that flows into the tank.
a) Draw a sketch of the problem and label the control volume.
b) What is the continuity equation?
c) What is the energy equation?
d) Combine the continuity and energy equations into a single equation. Move all terms over to the left
hand side, so the right hand side is equal to zero.
e) We are given a pressure at state 2, but no temperature. You need to assume an initial value, get the
thermodynamic properties, and plug those values into your equation from step d).
f) Iterate on temperature until the right hand side of the equation is approximately zero. Now you can
determine the final mass in the tank, and complete the problem.
