Problem 4 (9 points)
A vertical piston-cylinder device with two sets of stops (see Figure) contains 2 kg of water. Initially (State
1) the water is at 600 kPa and 300°C and it firmly touches the upper stops. Now a cooling process starts
and the piston will stay in its initial location until the pressure inside the cylinder decreases to 300 kPa
(State 2). After that, and with further cooling, the piston will start descending in an isobaric process until
it hits the lower set of stops (State 3). The volume of the system when the piston is resting on the lower
stops is half that of the initial volume at state 1.
After that, cooling continues until the pressure in the system reaches 50 kPa (State 4).
Determine:
a) The specific volume of the system at state 1.
b) Fill the table below with properties and phases at states 2, 3 and 4.
c) The work done during the whole process.

A mass of 5 kg of saturated liquid-vapor mixture of water is contained in the
piston-cylinder device which is shown below. Initially, the pressure of the
mixture is 100 kPa (state 1). Due to heat addition, the piston reaches the stops in
an isobaric process (state 2) where the volume is triple of the original volume.
Heat addition continued until the pressure rises to 300 kPa (state 3).
