5. (MC) A manufacturer mixes three alloys to yield 10,000 kg/h of a desired alloy. The alloy compositions (in wt%) are given below: Feed Alloys Component 1 2 3 4 Desired Alloy A 60 20 20 0 25 B 20 60 0 20 25 C 20 0 60 20 25. D 0 20 20 60 25 a) Draw and completely label a flow sheet for this process. In your labeling, use total flow rates and compositions to label each stream. In addition, label the composition of the desired alloy as unknowns (e.g., XA, XB, XC, 1-XA-XB-XC). b) Can the desired alloy be prepared using only alloys 1, 2 and 3? If so, determine the feed rates that they should be fed at. c) Suppose alloy 4 is also used. Calculate the required feed rates of the four alloys. d) Finally, suppose that you wanted to start producing a new alloy with a composition of 40 wt% A, an equal amount of B and C, and an unspecified wt% of D. In what proportions would the four alloys need to be mixed, and what would be the composition of this new alloy product? Hint: For part a), set up your flow sheet for all four alloy feeds, and write the component balances with the feed alloy amounts and the product compositions as unknowns. Then, for parts b-d you can simply use MathCad to solve, using a new Given-Find block for each part.
