2) A mass A weighing 2 kg is attached to a spring with spring constant 20 N/m, and is initially at
rest at x = 0. A second mass B, also 2 kg, moves toward the first at a speed of 1 m/s: the
two masses collide inelastically at t=0. The two masses remain in contact as the spring
compresses.
k = 20 N/m
A=2 kg
V = ?
k = 20 N/m
A=2 kg
B=2 kg
v = 1
B=2 kg
a. What is the velocity of the combined masses just after the collision?
b. How far does the spring compress in order to bring the masses to a halt?
c. The spring pushes the masses back the way they came. When the masses pass
through x=0 again, they separate, because the spring begins to pull on Mass A, but it's
not attached to Mass B. At what time does the separation occur? (Hint: between the
time of collision and separation, the system behaves as a mass-spring oscillator with
mass 4 kg.)
After separation, Mass B continues to move away, while Mass A continues to oscillate on its
spring.
d. What is the period of oscillation of Mass A after Mass B has left?
e. Make a complete account of the energy in the system before the collision, and after
Mass B has moved away. (How much energy is in Mass B? How much in Mass A and
its spring? How much has been lost? etc.)
