The excavator shown consists of a boom (2) that can pivot at its base, and a
hydraulic cylinder (3), also connected to the base, which extends to raise the
boom. A cylinder (5) extends and contracts to change the orientation of the stick
(4) relative to the boom. A cylinder (1) extends and contracts to change the
orientation of the bucket (6) relative to the stick. The bucket holds material of
large weight, while the masses of all the other members are negligible compared
to that weight.
All loads act essentially in one plane, so the problem can be modeled in 2D.
