Question 3.
To meet the transient requirements, design a compensator to place the closed loop system poles into
the required region of the S-plane for the worse case loading condition (Rmin should be used). This
can be done by applying the following process:
a) Determine a location in the S-plane where you wish for the root locus branch to pass through.
b) Determine the phase of G(s)H(s) at this location.
c) Calculate the phase lead required to bring the phase of G(s)H(s) at the desired location back to -180°.
d) Place the zero on the real axis at location more negative than the zero due to the PI controller.
e) Place the pole on the real axis so that the phase lead introduced by the compensator ensures that the
phase of G(s)H(s) is exactly -180° at the desired location.
For your calculations, you should use requirements from Question 1, plant TF for the buck converter
in Section 1.2, and PI controller with reset time of 33.333 µs.
Identify the controller gain required for the desired location that you have identified for the purposes
of your compensator design.
