Question 1
A vehicle propeller shaft transmits 1250 Nm of torque at 1800 rpm. Calculate the transmitted
shaft power.
Question 2
The propeller shaft in Question 1 is fitted with a 20 tooth gear that drives a 120 tooth gear on a
rear-drive axle shaft. What is the gear reduction ratio? Calculate the axle shaft's torque, power
and speed.
Question 3
A wheel/tyre assembly with an effective rolling radius of 0.45 m is connected to the rear-drive
axle shaft described in Question 2. Calculate the tractive effort developed at the road surface
and the vehicle's speed. What is the vehicle's top speed in 11th gear? (assume max engine
speed of 2300 rpm). Refer to attached ZF brochure.
Question 4
The vehicle is fitted with a ZF 12AS1210 automatic transmission as per the attached sheet.
Calculate the vehicle speed in kilometres/hr per 1000 engine rev/min in 1st, 2nd, 11th and
12th gears, then convert the vehicle speed to ms-1.
Question 5
The vehicle is fitted with a MAN D0836LFG50 (Euro 4) diesel engine as per the attached
sheet. Now draw the graph for the constant power condition for this vehicle over the speed
range 0 to 30 m/s. Plot points at each 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 18, 24, 30 m/s. The units of the x-axis are
to be in m/s.
Question 6
The vehicle is fitted with a MAN D08 engine having power and torque characteristics as per
the attached chart. For this engine, calculate the speed ratio, torque back up and flexibility
ratio.
Question 7
Now plot the tractive effort vs speed curves (to be done in excel) for the four gear ratios used in
Question 4 on to the constant power curve developed in Question 5. See 'Guide to using engine
torque curves' for more details.
For this engine, transmission and driveline arrangement calculate:
a) the maximum tractive effort the vehicle can develop. At what speed does this occur?
b) the maximum tractive effort the vehicle can develop in 12th gear. What is the theoretical
maximum speed of the vehicle (discounting aerodynamic effects)?
