(a) The peak output voltage is to be around 9 V, and the ripple voltage is to be no more than 5% of the
peak voltage. Determine the required tum ratio of the step-down transformer, and the required value of
the filter capacitor.

To reduce the variation of output voltage from above rectifier, a Zener voltage regulator can be inserted
(dashed box). A shunt Zener voltage regulator is shown below.

Suppose that the raw supply voltage to the Zener shunt regulator varies between 8.5 and 9 V, and the
load current varies between 0 and 20 mA. The Zener shunt regulator provides an output voltage
approximately 5 V. The Zener diode(1N4733) has Vz = 5.1 V at the test current of 45 mA, and
incremental resistance r = 72 at 45 mA test current.
(a) Determine the resistance value of the resistor R2 for minimum Zener current of 5mA. Use standard
resistor value for the design (last page).
