2. Two cylinders are to be press-fitted together so that the principal stress with the greatest
absolute value is not to exceed 60% of the yield strength of the material. Both members are
made of a steel with a yield strength of 80 ksi, E = 30x106 psi, and v= 0.29. The nominal
diameters of the cylinders are 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 in. (a) Determine the maximum acceptable
radial interference and the corresponding interface pressure, (b) For part (a), plot the stress
distribution for each member, (c) If the assembly in part(a) is subjected to an internal
pressure of 5000 psi, determine the resulting stress distribution in both members using the
method of superposition. Plot your results.
