Problem 4
The compound gear train of a three stages reduction gear is use to transmit power
from a power source to a drum with 1 meter in diameter, as shown in Figure P4. The
power source generates 500 Nm torque at the speed of 500 rpm and can produce
acceleration of 10 rad/s². Assume there is no friction in the drum, mass of the cable is
negligible and the cable is in-elastic. With this condition, determine the following.
Angular velocity and acceleration of the drum.
i
ii.
Power required to overcome the friction torque in the bearing.
iii.
Power required to accelerate the inertia of the gear system.
iv.
Load M that the drum can lift.
