Arctic Ice¹ The following functions give the (fictional) amount of artic sea ice in millons of square kilometers each month of the year. f(x) describes the arctic ice in 1980 (second full year of data), g(x) describes the arctic ice in 2012 (record low year), and h(x) describes arctic ice in 2017 (most recent year). In these functions, x = 0 corresponds to the first day of January, x = 1 corresponds to the first day of February, etc. Use these functions to answer the following questions individually or with your group. Type your answers up into a report, as if you were presenting this information to an agency researching climate change. Your final report should be uploaded on Canvas. Include a conclusion summarizing the ideas and information in your report. You are welcome and encouraged to use technology such as Sage or Desmos (or others) while answering these questions. However, anytime you use technology you should clearly state what technology was used and how it was used in your final report. You should find at some point that you need to solve an equation which equals zero for x. One option for doing this is to use Cubic Equation Solver, Degree 4 equation solver, or Quadratic Equation Solver. f(x) = -0.02x4 + 0.575 x³ -5.27 x²+15.0938 x + 10 g(x) = -0.02x4 + 0.585 x³ - 5.38875 x² + 15.0609 x + 10 h(x) = -0.02 x + 0.6 x³ 5.77375 x² + 17.5313x+8 3. For each year, when is arctic ice melting? Be specific and precise. You should have three separate answers. Each answer should go something like: In 1980, artic ice melted from [day] of [month] until [day] of [month]. Show work to support your answers. 4. For each year, when is artic ice forming? Like in question 3, you should give three separate, precise answers. What is the relationship between melting or forming and the derivative function? 5. Find the maximum and minimum amounts of sea ice for each year. When (on what day) do these maxima and minima occur? You may use Sage or other technology to assist with solving equations that equal zero
