You can data mine other data if you're not interested in data mining stock prices! Maybe go back and look at the NFL Quarterback data that we looked at earlier in the semester or some other data. Data mining is the process of sorting through large amounts of data and picking out relevant information. It is usually used by business intelligence organizations, and financial analysts, but is increasingly being used in the sciences to extract information from the enormous data sets generated by modern experimental and observational methods. In this project, you will do some preliminary data mining of some company's stock or other data of your choosing and interest. As an example, you could look at Google. Your program could calculate the monthly averages prices of Google stock from 2004 to 2008 and tell the 6 best and 6 worst months for Google. Read more on page 418 and 419 of your textbook where you can also find sample data input files, code and formulas. 1. Go to finance.yahoo.com, enter Google in the search field, select "Historical Prices" and download a spreadsheet relative to what data you want to analyze. 2. Write the code to extract the data that you need for your project 3. Print the data to an output file 4. Use the output file to plot your data.
