1)
Carbon reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide in a steady flow chamber.
Calculate the energy involved and state the type of reaction. Assume the reactants and
products are at 25 °C and 1 atm.
2)
A marine boiler burns coal from Illinois No.6 seam. The coal has an elemental
analysis (mass basis) of S = 1.5 %, H = 10%, C = 88% and Ash (non reacting) = 0.5%.
The HHV of the fuel is 18500 BTU/1bfuel. 15% excess air is used that contains 0.0176 lb
water vapor per lb of dry air. The fuel and air is introduced into the combustor at 80 °F
and the flue gases from the stack exit at 450 °F.
Calculate the mass of the feed moist air per lb of fuel burnt.
Find the composition of the flue gases after complete combustion (mass or volume).
Bonus: If the heat capacities of CO2, SO2, O2, N2, and H2O are 10, 10.4, 7.3, 7.0, and 8.2
BTU/(mol.°F), calculate
a) the heat lost with the flue gases per 100 lbs of coal burnt
b) the efficiency of the boiler
