Question 1 (30 marks);
A rectangular beam has the dimensions b = 350 mm, d
700 mm. The concrete cylinder strength f=
28 MPa, the steel reinforcement bars has yield
strength fy 420 MPa.
a) It is required to calculate the reinforcements for
beam with a limited depth of 700 mm under
ultimate design moments of M, 800 kN.m. (10
marks)
b) Check whether the section will be designed as
409 p
b=350 mm
d = 700 mm
singly or doubly. Use steel bars of diameter; 28mm, Area = 616
mm²/bar for tension reinforcement, (5 marks)
c) Add 3 bars of diameter = 20mm, total area = 942mm² as a compression
steel, calculate the new design moment M, for the new doubly reinforced
section. (15 marks)
Question 2: (10 marks)
Architectural considerations limit the height of a 6m long simple beam to 400 mm
and the width to 300 mm. the following loads and materials properties are
given: W 11kN/m, W 24kN/m, The concrete cylinder strength
f=35 MPa, the yield point of the steel fy = 420 MPa.
Determine the reinforcement for the beam.
Assume 628 (Area 616 mm²/bar) with one layer arrangement, concrete cover to
reinforcement center = 60mm
Question 3: (10 marks)
For T-reinforced concrete section beam, the concrete
cylinder strength f=28 MPa, the steel
reinforcement bars has yield strength fy =
420 MPa. Determine the ACI design moment
capacity M. Perform necessary checks.
