Linear Regression Assignment
In this project, you will perform regression analysis on data to develop a
mathematical model that relates two variables. Then you will use this model to
make predictions.
We are trying to determine if the statement, "if you shoot on goal you will score"
true.
The game of hockey is based on passing the puck and shooting at the net. You
often hear that if you want to score, you have to shoot on goal. It seems like a
logical assumption. You will try to verify if you can truly rely on that statement.
The following data was collected from CBS sports for the preseason of 2001.

1. Create a scatterplot and draw it on a piece of graph paper or if you are using
Excel, print it off from your computers.
You need to verify the presence of a relationship between the two variables. Make
a scatterplot with these two variables, and show your independent and dependent
variables. Label the axes and the graph accordingly (x vs. y).
2. Calculate the regression equation and the correlation coefficient. Add the
regression line to your scatterplot.
3. Make Conclusions.
Write a one page paper explaining the significance of your results and how you can
interpret them.
Include the following items in your paper and whatever else you feel relevant.
(Please bold the answers to the following questions in your paper.)
a) You will need to examine what type of correlation exists. Is there a strong,
weak, or no correlation in the data? Use the r value to help you determine this.
b) How might your conclusions impact the real world? What sorts of useful
applications might you be able to make from your data? GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF
HOW YOUR REGRESSION EQUATION CAN BE USED TO PREDICT FUTURE
SITUATIONS.
