Problem 7. (ATP Expenditure in Bacteria)
A. The estimated biosynthetic cost for synthesizing and assembling one amino acid in an E.
Coli bacterium in efficient growing conditions is 5.2 ATP equivalents. If, on average, there
are 3 x 106 proteins per bacterium, and 300 amino acids per protein, calculate the
protein energy cost per bacterium. Give your answer in units of 10" ATP equivalents.
B. An efficiently growing E. Coli requires 2 x 10° glucose molecules for building materials to
double its mass. Each glucose molecule produces 30 ATP molecules. There is also the
additional energy expenditure of assembling the amino acids, as calculated in Part A. The
cell also assembles DNA, RNA and other molecules, which requires a further 5.32 x
109 ATP equivalents. Assuming these are the three main biosynthetic costs, calculate the
total number of ATP equivalents required for the doubling of an efficiently growing E. Coli
bacterium. Give your answer in units of 10" ATP equivalents. (Hint: Calculate the ATP
equivalents required for the building materials, and sum that with the biosynthetic cost of
assembly of proteins and RNA, DNA and other molecules.)
C. What percentage of ATP equivalents are used just for the labor of assembling the
molecules alone? Give the number to the nearest integer percentage.
