A population's pattern of survivorship is an important feature of its life history. It is the set of traits that affects an organism's schedule of reproduction and survival, influencing its fitness. As a limited food supply is divided among more and more individuals, birth rates may decline as individuals have fewer resources available for reproduction. One life history pattern is typified by small-bodied, short-lived species that develop and reach sexual maturity rapidly, have a large number of offspring, and offer little or no parental care. Such organisms have an opportunistic life history that enables them to take immediate advantage of favorable conditions.
