Q1 The circular tube illustrated in Figure 1 is made from cold drawn AISI 1018 steel. The tube is cantilevered at one end. At the other end, a coupled moment (M = 1.5kNm) and a torque (T = 2.5 kNm) are applied. Stress in the tube is maximised at the 7.5mm diameter hole machined through the tube. (i) Determine the factor of safety guarding against failure for static loading conditions if the tube is mounted in an ambient temperature of 20°C. (!!) (25) If the loads are applied cyclically, fully reversed, and in phase, with peak amplitudes M = 1.5kNm and T = 2.5 kNm, determine the endurance limit and determine if the tube will have finite or infinite fatigue life. In your calculations assume that the tube is mounted in an ambient temperature of 50°C, and that a reliability of 99% is required. (9) (iii) If infinite fatigue life is determined from (ii), calculate the factor of safety. If finite fatigue life is determined from (ii), determine the number of cycles to failure. (6) Note: Use table A-16 and figures 6-20 and 6-21 in Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design to determine stress concentration effects.
