1. A small wastewater treatment plant discharges 500 thousand gallons per
day into Long Island Sound. This effluent contains about one gram per liter
of nitrogen.
a. How many kilograms of nitrogen are discharged each day by this plant?
(1 gallon= 3.636 liters)
b. How many kilograms are discharged per year by this plant?
c. If the annual nitrogen load from WWTPs were not to exceed 13000 metric
tons per year (one metric ton = 1000 kilograms) how many plants this size
would be permitted?
a. Fracking brine is continuously released from a leaky well into an aquifer
whose parameters match those in the handouts (See pages 138 through
141 attached). The brine concentration of salt is 50 grams (50,000
milligrams) per liter. Ten per cent of the injected fluid, i.e., 90 barrels per
day, leaks into the aquifer, as described on page 138.
b. After one year how many gallons of brine have leaked into the aquifer?
(1 barrel 42 gallons). After three years? After five?
=
c. From the figures estimate the brine concentration 150 meters down-
gradient (along the line of flow) from the wellhead after one year.
Estimate the concentration after three years.
d. Now look at a spot 500 meters down-gradient and again estimate the
brine concentrations after one year, three years and 5.3 years.
e. Using graph paper sketch the 5.3 year concentration profile along the
center line of the flow.
