A surge tank is illustrated below. The exit section at the bottom of the tank is designed with
a slotted weir (V-notch) so that the outlet flowrate Q(t) is proportional to the level of fluid in
the tank h(t) to the 1.5 power. Hence Q = Rh15, where R is a constant. The cross-
sectional area of the tank is constant and the density p is likewise constant.
If a single stream enters the tank at a flow rate of Qi(t),
a) Find the transfer function H(s)/Q,(s).
b) Identify the process gain and the time constant of the system.
