Part 1: Reflection and Refraction The flame of a lit candle is at height ho 4 cm and is placed a distance do = 8 cm to the left of a very thick planar slab of plastic (index of refraction plastic = 2), as shown below. Light emerging from the flame will both reflect off the interface between the air and the plastic and refract into the plastic. In the picture below the axis is marked every 1 cm, and three light rays are shown coming off the candle's flame. Air (nair = 1) Plastic (plastic -2) (i) (ii) (iii) a) [0 points] For each of the light rays (i), (ii), and (iii) shown, find the angle of incidence (the angle that the incoming light ray makes with the normal to the mirror), the angle of reflection (the angle that the reflected ray makes with the normal to the surface), and the angle of refraction (the angle that the refracted ray makes with the normal to the surface). b) [1 point] On graph paper or a copy of the above picture, draw the rays resulting from the reflection of the three incident light rays. Using dotted lines, 'trace back' the three reflected rays and show that they converge at a single point. Be sure to use a straight-edge and to make your sketch to-scale. To an observer standing to the left of the diagram, what is observed is a bunch of light rays all spreading out as if they had originated at a single point and traveled straight to the eye (that is, the light can't communicate that it has been reflected). The reflected light rays actually don't intersect but they all appear to come from the same point. To find this point you will 'trace back' the reflected light rays by simply extending your reflected rays to the right so that the traced back ray and the original reflected ray combine to form one continuous straight line! This point where these light rays appear to diverge from is known as the reflected image of the candle. c) [1 point] How far behind the mirror is the image? How tall is it? What is the magnification? d) [0 points] On graph paper or a copy of the above picture, draw the rays resulting from the refraction and the of the three incident light rays.
